FCA Impact - Sam's Story

Shelley Pearson • May 26, 2020
Sam was sitting in the office of her college soccer coach one day when her coach told her about FCA. This was the first Sam had ever heard of FCA. “I think you should start one here,” her coach said. Her initial reaction to the suggestion was to brush it off. She was way too busy and did not need another thing added to her plate.

As God often does, he kept putting the idea in front of Sam and in her junior year of college she and the other leaders launched a successful FCA huddle at the University of Dallas. “It became a driving place of solace for me. I just had to get to Wednesday nights.” There was amazing camaraderie, great speakers, funny skits, plenty of laughter, and powerful times of prayer.

Sam fell in love with FCA, and so did others. Some of her soccer teammates said their faith walks would not have been the same without FCA. The weekly huddle had a “No judgment, come as you are” atmosphere, and it was somewhere people loved to be. As her senior year came to a close, Sam could not believe how much she mourned the end of her time in FCA.

That old adage, “You don’t know what you have until it’s gone” resonated with her. Sam did not realize how much FCA has impacted her until she did not have it anymore. Being an FCA leader changed her. The leadership opportunities drove her to grow spiritually, and she learned to cultivate deep relationships. Others from her FCA huddle would thank her for starting FCA on the campus, but her response was always, “It’s not me, it’s God.” The same people would remind her that she was “the ‘yes’ that started it all.” She accepted the call. She had been obedient, and she reaped some awesome benefits as a result of her obedience. Those two years in FCA created a passion in her for the ministry of FCA in the lives of young people.

FCA continues to be a driving force in Sam’s life today. She now teaches social studies at Hill Murray, a private secondary school in Maplewood, Minnesota. She longs to see students and athletes at her school impacted by FCA, so she applied to start a huddle earlier this year. She received approval two weeks before school moved online in March. Now she has to somehow connect with potential student leaders online. It will take extra effort for Sam to convince students that FCA is something they want to add to their schedules, but she is so passionate about FCA that she believes that others will get excited when they hear her stories of how FCA changed her life.

In addition to recruiting student leaders, she will be enlisting other staff members to come alongside and lead after next year. Sam is in a two-year position at Hill Murray and will move on to another school after the 2020-2021 school year. She knows that she only needs to get a couple people excited and that they, in turn, will get others excited about FCA.

During her senior year in college, the annual FCA them was, “Be Not Afraid.” The group had t-shirts made to remind themselves that God called them not to fear. Several Bible references were listed on the back of the shirt, including Joshua 1:9 which says, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” God worked out that verse in Sam’s life in college, and it continues to make a difference in the way she lives today.

Sam could be intimidated, or she could give up hope when faced with the daunting task of trying to start a new FCA huddle while school is online and she only has one more year at the school, but Sam has been here before. She is not afraid or discouraged, but she is leaning on God for strength and courage to make the biggest impact she possibly can in a short amount of time.

“FCA is just awesome. I love it. I think of how I just brushed it off at first, and now it is such a big part of my faith journey. It’s my hope for kids who get involved in the future, that one decision to say yes will change everything. For so long, sports had been such a pinnacle part of who I was and to realize that my faith life doesn’t have to be separated from that is just so profound. I want more young athletes to hear that voice.”
