FCA Impact - Paul & Medora's Story

Shelley Pearson • June 11, 2020
Her dad was a member of one of the first FCA huddles in the state of North Dakota. He was also one of the first to attend an FCA sports camp in Colorado and served on the North Dakota FCA board for a couple decades. He attributes much of his athletic success to his time in FCA.

Her sister was heavily involved in FCA at her high school (she attended the huddle with Carson Wentz, Quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles). She now serves as a coach. FCA was monumental in her spiritual growth and understanding of scripture in her high school years and beyond, and it prepared her to be an awesome coach.

Even though her family members were so involved, Medora never took part in FCA. Her husband, Paul, had no history with FCA either. So why are they both so passionate about it now?

They have seen the impact and influence FCA has on coaches and athletes. They saw it in her dad and sister. They see it now in their own sons who are part of the FCA huddle at St. Croix Preparatory Academy in Stillwater, Minnesota.

As soon as she found out there was a huddle at St. Croix Prep she offered their support to the huddle coaches. Paul and Medora are now affectionately known as “The Food Fairies” because they regularly provide the snacks at huddle meetings. Initially motivated by their personal observation of the impact of FCA, they continue to support this huddle because of the impact they see firsthand in the lives of students—their sons and their teammates.

Paul and Medora have witnessed the entire huddle growing together in Christian community, learning to pray together, and taking opportunities to share their faith with others. The huddle coaches and student leaders like their son, Barrett, model what it looks like to be an active Christ-follower, and it is changing lives at their school. Medora says, “Many of the kids who are going to the FCA huddle aren’t necessarily the ones who are going to church on Sundays. They are hearing the message of Jesus through another avenue – the avenue of FCA.”

It isn’t only the students whose lives are being transformed. Paul and Medora share an influence in what they affectionately call this their “bleacher ministry.” They may be sitting on the bleachers next to other parents during their son’s games and, “All of a sudden, you’re sharing Jesus. FCA creates that way to connect.” Just like the students, Paul and Medora have learned to be intentional about being lights for Christ in a setting where it would be easy to ignore the Spirit’s leading and just enjoy the game. God is using them to reach parents at the same time the FCA huddle members are reaching other students.

Paul also serves on the FCA East Metro board. Two and a half years ago, the East Metro Area Director, Brent, came to a breakfast at Paul’s church and gave a presentation about FCA. Knowing Paul’s heart for reaching others, the assistant pastor connected Brent and Paul who set up a lunch shortly thereafter. The assistant pastor was right. FCA was a good fit for Paul, and Brent invited him to join the FCA East Metro board.

Paul serves because it is a great ministry in the East Metro that had been underutilized before Brent joined the FCA team. He is excited about the growth he has seen in the ministry over the past couple of years and how it is impacting students’ lives. FCA has now become a vital ministry in the East Metro, and Paul is thankful to be part of watching it grow.

FCA East Metro board members each send handwritten thank you notes to donors of the ministry. Recently, Brent ran into a donor at a school event. “He pulled a card out of his back pocket and showed it to me. It was the card Paul had sent that month. He said he’d never received anything like it from any other organization he’s donated to.”

Paul and Medora support the ministry of FCA for one simple reason: FCA changes lives. They saw the effects of the ministry on the lives of Medora’s dad and sister. They see the impact on the lives of their sons and the other students who attend the huddle at St. Croix Prep. They get to experience change in parents as they share with them on the bleachers while cheering their kids on. And they get to impact the future of the ministry in the St. Croix Valley. As Brent has watched the family’s influence in FCA grow he observed, “It’s clear FCA has been and is becoming even more a family affair for the Bensons.”
