Healing Hearts at Camp

Has something happened in your life that has caused you to question God’s love for you? Or perhaps, has God allowed something difficult and you are angry with God? You know He could have prevented the difficult circumstances, and yet, He didn’t. And though you don’t want to admit, deep down, it has shaken your faith.

Ellie came to FCA Sports Camp feeling that way.

In January, her dad died suddenly of a blood clot that traveled from his leg to his lung to his heart. Because of hospital regulations, she wasn’t even able to say goodbye to him. Her dad, who she was close to and had expected to be in her life for many decades, was suddenly gone. And though God could have prevented it, He didn’t. She was devastated and angry with God. She stopped attending youth group and was just going through the motions as a Christian because of the depth of her hurt and anger.

Since her dad died, Ellie doesn’t like being away from home, but her friend, Grace, encouraged her to come. Ellie wanted to hang out with Grace and she loves volleyball, so she came – with some apprehension. She said, “The first day I got here I was unsure of how I would like it. I felt like it was random people I don’t know and a random person leading us, but I like volleyball and wanted to get better at it.” The speaker shared engaging and challenging messages, and Ellie began to feel more comfortable with camp.

The more time Ellie spent with her huddle, the more she became comfortable around the people who at first seemed random. The night her huddle leader, Keziah, shared her testimony was the turning point for Ellie – for camp and in her walk with God. Ellie said, “Keziah’s testimony was similar to mine in how she lost someone close to her. She had been mad too. I thought, ‘that is what I’m going through.’” Other huddle members shared about difficult things in their lives as well, and while no one’s story was just like hers, Ellie realized they were all walking through hard things, and she wasn’t alone.

She recommitted her life to Christ that night in large part because of Keziah’s story.

And Keziah, a busy college student, almost didn’t come to camp because she had already missed three weeks of work due to other commitments. And for the first couple days of camp, she wasn’t sure whether her huddle was being impacted. She said, “My group was very surface-level at the beginning and didn’t want to dig any deeper.” Though slightly discouraged, she kept pressing on and saw fruit halfway through the week.

She said, “Testimony time is when our group finally started to open up. My huddle shared some tough things.” It was during that sharing time that Keziah began to see how and why God had orchestrated her being at camp.” He placed her in that huddle at that time to be able to share her heart with Ellie and the rest of her huddle and see lives transformed. She was simply open to sharing her story, and God used what she had walked through to reach others with His love. She said, “It’s amazing to see how God works through my uncertainty in coming to camp.”

Returning Home Changed

As Ellie leaves camp, it is her deep desire to stay connected with God. She realizes that it will take intentionality, but she now has a huddle who knows her heart and her struggles and can walk that path with her. She still has things to work through and knows she will feel the pain of losing her dad for a long time, but she also understands so much more of the depth of God’s love for her and that He has a plan for her, even in her hurt. She saw how He used Keziah to speak truth to her and looks forward to how God can use her in the lives of others.

We pray the same is true for you.

If you have been wounded by loss or other difficulties and are struggling to accept God’s love for you, please remember He loves you deeply. Not one hard thing you walk through is wasted. If you are angry with Him for circumstances He could have prevented but didn’t, we pray you see a glimpse of how He will heal you and how you can reach others by sharing your story.

And would you pray for Ellie and the other 400 sports campers, that God would take what they learned at camp and the decisions they made while there and grow each one more deeply in relationship with Him?
