Alexina's FCA Story

Renee Hinchcliffe • May 4, 2023

Meet Alexina, a high school student and FCA leader at White Bear Lake High School in White Bear Lake, Minnesota!

Alexina Erickson is a senior at White Bear Lake High School. Throughout middle and high school, she played on the soccer and tennis teams and has been involved in several ways with Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Alexina was introduced to FCA because her older brother was involved, and in 7th grade she travelled down to Decorah, Iowa to attend FCA Regional Sports Camp. She returned to camp the following summer, and upon entering high school she joined the FCA huddle that meets on her school campus. Since then, she has been back to Sports Camp multiple times, volunteered as a huddle captain at one of the East Metro local sports camps, and stepped up to co-lead the weekly huddle at the high school.

Alexina enjoys being a part of FCA because she gets to meet other Christian students and teachers at school. “Our FCA huddle is a place where I can meet other people and learn from their faith and their experiences.” Wanting to go deeper, she knew the next step was to lead someone else in their faith. In addition to leading the FCA huddle at White Bear Lake, Alexina also leads a small group of 8th-grade girls at her church along with another small group of high schoolers on a separate night of the week. To her, being a leader is rewarding because she is able to be a light for Jesus and help others to grow a deeper relationship with God.

And for Alexina personally, being a leader has encouraged her to study the Bible more and grow in her own faith. “You learn so much more being a leader than just attending the group. People may come to me with questions, which has pushed me further to pursue the Bible for answers, especially on topics relevant to today's society.” Through leadership, students like Alexina are equipped to have conversations about faith with their friends, classmates, and peers, shining a light for Jesus in the classroom, the cafeteria, the sports field, and out into the world.

Alexina will graduate from White Bear Lake High School in June. Instead of enrolling in college right away this fall, she chose to take a step of faith and will be going on a nine-month mission trip with the World Race. During this time, Alexina and her team of 30 others will travel to four different countries (Cambodia, Guatemala, South Africa, and Eswatini) where they will engage and serve the native people through evangelism and church planting, as well as working with kids in local schools and at camps.

Alexina says, “Ever since my sophomore year in high school, I’ve felt a ‘nudge’ from God to become a missionary after completing high school and I have yet to lose that feeling. I feel that this nine-month-long mission trip will give me a good glimpse into the lives of missionaries and what they do, especially overseas. Another reason why I want to take this gap year mission trip is because I want to explore the world to better understand people, their cultures, religions, and overall way of life that is different from where I have grown up. I would love to see how God works in these countries and areas we will be living in! I also really have a heart for helping children and those not as fortunate, and I would love to be a light in their lives shining Jesus’ love, even if it’s for a short period. Lastly, I believe this trip will be very beneficial for me and my future, as it will help me to grow my faith. I hope I can see God in a new light after this trip and that through the people, places, and situations I experience, I can come away from this being thankful for everything He provides for me and everything I have learned. I don’t know what God has in store for this trip, or exactly what He will show me, but I am ready for whatever may come my way!”

One of the goals and missions of FCA is to raise up the next generation of Christian leaders, whether they continue to be involved with FCA or they move on to serve elsewhere. As a community of believers, FCA loves to support Alexina as she takes this step of faith to go on the World Race. Please join us in prayer for her, her team, and the people they will reach on this trip. Additionally, if you are willing and able, please consider supporting Alexina with a financial gift as she works to raise money for travel, lodging, and trip expenses. Without a doubt, this trip will impact her and many others. Thank you!
