Our FCA Team is Growing

Tanja Hansen • April 5, 2024

In our fall newsletter, just six months ago, we asked readers to pray for six prospective staff who were working toward raising financial support to come on staff with FCA. Those people were Gavin Bowser, Dwight Nelson, Matt Warren, Collin Hemann, Dave Frasier, and Mike Seiffert.

We are thrilled to share this update with you – every one of them is fully funded and starting their ministry to coaches and athletes in their respective areas! Praise God for His faithfulness and provision through loyal donors who support the mission of FCA with their financial resources!

But wait, there’s more!

Not only were those six prospective staff able to join the Minnesota FCA team, we also hired Scott Smith, Dave Bentrud, Jay Mayes, and Cole Morgan.

But, that’s not all!

As we celebrate the new staff on the Minnesota FCA team, we’re praying for new prospective staff who are currently in the support-raising process: DJ Davis, Chris Strange, and Cam

All glory to God! We are so grateful for Him raising up and bringing these incredible servant-hearted teammates to our ministry. And, we can’t wait to introduce you to them:

Gavin Bowser: Gavin is an Area Rep on the east metro side of the Twin Cities. His call to ministry started while in YWAM in 2020 and grew throughout college as his faith was matured by the coaches and players around him.

“FCA is an amazing place where my passion for sports and ministry meets. As a newer staff member, I am eager to work out this calling on my life and see Jesus’ work in the lives of my teammates, coaches, athletes, as well as myself.”

Dwight Nelson: Dwight is an Area Rep in the north metro area of the Twin Cities. He taught at Meadow Creek/Legacy Christian Academy for 21 years where he was both the head boys’ basketball and head track coach. He also coached women’s basketball at Bethel University for 13 years. He has served in full-time ministry at Constance Free Church as a Regional Presenter for 3-Dimensional Coaching.

Dwight’s passion for Jesus Christ and discipleship steered him from work with orphanage ministries in Juarez, Mexico and training and discipling coaches in Zambia, to leading and mentoring FCA discipleship groups in the North Metro. Dwight’s heart for Jesus led him to full time ministry with FCA in 2023, where he seeks to engage coaches’, athletes’, and parents’ hearts with the Gospel and train disciples who, in turn, make disciples who transform their courts, fields and world.

“I love the way that God uses athletics not only to develop perseverance and positivity but also our significance and purpose in Him.”

Matt Warren: Matt is an Area Rep in the Duluth area. He has a background in coaching, social work, insurance, and volunteer leadership positions at his church.

"I desire to see the spread of the Gospel and God's glory throughout Duluth and NE Minnesota. I pray that many coaches and athletes would be saved and built up in their faith, and that schools, cities, and communities would be changed."

"God has shown his love to me and walked with me in and through many dark places. I desire to utilize my story of redemption along with my strengths and gifts to bring salvation, hope, and healing to many through my ministry with FCA."

Collin Hemann: Collin is an Area Rep in the west metro area of the Twin Cities. He recently graduated from the University of Northwestern, St. Paul and was a four-year collegiate athlete on the tennis team. The summer before his senior year, Collin served as an intern with Minnesota FCA and fell in love with the ministry.

“The reason I joined FCA is because it combines two of my favorite things, faith and sports. These two areas have always had the largest impact on my life, and when I joined my own FCA huddle in high school, I realized that I didn't have to keep them separate. Now as a part of the FCA staff, I hope to share with athletes of all different abilities and backgrounds that they do not have to keep their faith and sports life separate, but rather the two can and should go hand in hand.”

Dave Frasier: Dave is the Area Director for the north metro area of the Twin Cities. Dave worked in the public school system as a teacher for 11 years. He coached high school sports, including four years as a varsity boys basketball head coach at Centennial High School. As a coach, he was involved with FCA and has seen the life-changing impact first-hand in the lives of coaches and athletes.

“God is using my passions for Jesus and Sports and my experiences through coaching and teaching to now serve the north metro communities through FCA.”

Mike Seiffert: Mike is the Representative for FCA Golf in Minnesota. His passion for golf developed at an early age and even played in the 1992 US Junior Amateur with Tiger Woods! He played collegiate golf at St. Cloud State University and continues to enjoy competing in local PGA Club Professional events.

Mike has worked as a physical education/health teacher and PGA Teaching Professional for the past 23 years. Within that time he also earned the distinction of PGA Master Professional. He has coached over 100 seasons of youth, high school and collegiate sports. Highlights include coaching a state high school championship team and a two-time individual state champion in golf.

Mike accepted Christ during the first MN FCA Golf Camp at Quadna when he was in junior high. He has continued to work as an instructor at the MN FCA Golf Camps since college. He credits his sister for being the most influential person in his spiritual development. Mike is excited to combine his love of golf and faith to serve in golf ministry on the MN FCA staff.

Scott Smith: Scott is an Ambassador in the St. Cloud area. As a business & ministry leader, teacher, and coach for nearly four decades, Scott has been involved in ministry as a layman, elder, full-time pastor and church planter. He came to know Christ through the ministry of Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) as a high school student-athlete at North Scott High School in Eldridge, Iowa. There he participated in football, baseball, and track and field. He competed at the D1 collegiate level as a decathlete at the University of Northern Iowa.

He is passionate about the platform of athletics to communicate the life changing message of the Gospel and using that platform to multiply disciples of Christ. As an FCA Ambassador, his vision is to catalyze new FCA huddles for both coaches and student athletes on campuses throughout central Minnesota.

Dave Bentrud: Dave is the Area Director in the Central Lakes region of Minnesota. He played football at the University of St. Thomas and has coached youth football, basketball, and baseball over the years. Dave served with the St. Cloud Police Department for the past 32 years and recently retired as Police Chief for the City of Waite Park. Throughout his law enforcement career, he also worked as an Adjunct Instructor in Criminal Justice at St. Cloud State University.

“After law enforcement, I was hoping to find an opportunity in Christian ministry.  Through a series of chance encounters with several people with current or past affiliations with FCA I felt led to learn more about the ministry of FCA.  I am very excited and honored to be a part of an organization with such a rich history and tradition of faithful Christian service.   FCA brings together my enjoyment of sports, with my appreciation for the impact coaches have had in my life together with my love for Jesus Christ!  I’m very appreciative of the opportunity to work with FCA within a region of the State where I grew up and have worked for so many years.”

Jay Mayes: Jay Mayes is the Ambassador for FCA Lacross in Minnesota. He is a current NCAA Division III Head Coach with experience both playing and coaching at every level from club to college.

“My faith is the driving force of my life and I have a passion for coaching and working to help teams and young athletes achieve their goals. Throughout my life, sports have played a pivotal role in the man that I have become. My various roles working in sports have taught me how to lead, sacrifice, communicate, and serve, and through these roles, I have acquired a stronger work ethic and become a more complete leader.”

Cole Morgan: Cole is an Area Rep in Southeast Minnesota. Cole comes to staff with years of FCA experience already - he was involved in the huddle at Schaeffer Academy from 7th - 12th grade and served as a Huddle Leader his senior year. He's also coached in the Southeast MN FCA Flag Football League for the past two years and worked as a Coach/Huddle Leader at the Rochester FCA Sports Camp for the past three years.

"I have always loved sports and have loved Jesus. The use of sports to expand the Kingdom is something that I really feel is my calling and my experience with FCA has given me the knowledge to know that FCA does a great job spreading the Gospel. I love God and I love sports. It’s as simple as that."

PROSPECTIVE STAFF:

DJ Davis: DJ joins us from St. Louis, Missouri, and is working on raising financial support to come on staff with the Twin Cities Collegiate team.

"I’m a former collegiate athlete & high school football coach who has committed himself to following Jesus Christ. During the past few years, I’ve gone to seminary and served as a pastoral resident in the local church in St. Louis, MO. Now, God has united my passion for ministry with my passion for sports, by leading my family and me to join the FCA Twin Cities Collegiate staff team."

Chris Strange: Chris Strange is an Alief, Texas native who graduated from Crown College located in St. Bonifacius, MN. While attending Crown, Chris was a 4-year starter at Safety. Chris earned his B.A in Sports Management and a minor in Christian Studies. After his playing days, he has experience in coaching football at both college and high school. His biggest passion is working with the next generation. For the past 4 years, Chris has had the amazing opportunity to work at Timber Bay Ministries as the program director in Waconia.

“I know the impact a coach can have on a player. For the first time in my life, my coaches at Crown shared the Gospel story with me, in one of the darkest times in my life. I didn’t grow up going to FCA, but God used coaches to influence my life, which has changed the trajectory of how I live out the Gospel. I want nothing more than to be a part of that impact. FCA provides a space for student-athletes to discover the very presence of God through their sport. This is an exciting time to serve with such an amazing ministry, Jesus and sports are a great combination."

Cam Morlan: Cam played football at Northwestern University in St Paul. During that, time he volunteered in Minneapolis mentoring students with FCA. He is very gifted at working with youth and has served youth in multiple different capacities throughout college. His time serving with FCA has had such a profound impact on his life and the lives of the students he was working with that he decided this is something that God is calling him to long-term. He is graduating from Northwestern in May, and is getting married in June.
