Terri's FCA Story

Terri Greener • December 18, 2024

I know this is a busy time of year – but I am hoping to capture a few moments of your time to call attention to the incredible ministry of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and the impact that being involved in the ministry has had not only in my own life, but also in the lives of so many other coaches and student-athletes.

When we think about the Gospel, we see Jesus joining people in their everyday lives, loving them and opening their eyes to the truth told in God’s Word. FCA is mirroring that in public schools, at camps, and on campuses worldwide – reaching students and families that might otherwise miss hearing the truth - that Jesus Saves!

Let me briefly share what I have personally seen Jesus accomplish in the lives of literally thousands of students through FCA - specifically through the huddles in the public school system. I have been a School Counselor for 30 years, and have witnessed FCA run in many schools. I’ve heard it described that, “Christians working in a public school are really missionaries disguised as teachers!” While that may seem extreme, it is a pretty good description of how having FCA in the public school can make ministry possible for teachers and coaches.

FCA provided a way for me to talk about Jesus to kids who might never find themselves in a church, but somehow Jesus finds them! FCA provides a platform where coaches and teachers can safely tell kids what and who to have hope in - Jesus. While a teacher or a coach may not be able to directly share the Gospel in their classroom or locker room, they CAN make an invitation to FCA where they can build relationships and share the love and hope found in Scripture.

I have countless testimonies of students’ lives who have been eternally impacted by FCA. Many of them have continued on in ministry themselves, thus multiplying the efforts of FCA to share the Gospel worldwide! I have also watched as students shared their new understanding of the love of Christ with their own families, and generationally it is making a huge impact!

I believe that God calls certain people to work in the public schools, and that schools are mission fields in need of workers. It is vital that FCA remains in our schools. I know it is getting increasingly difficult for FCA to have a presence in schools, be we cannot let up, we can’t take our foot off the gas. It is more important than ever before that we not only maintain the huddles we have in our schools, but that we pray and expand our territory (1 Chron 4:10). Every young person who does not have a personal relationship with Christ is in need of hearing the truth. FCA provides an avenue to meet kids where they are at and introduce them to Jesus.

If I could share one thing about the importance of FCA I would say this – our world is loud and is vying for our kids’ minds, hearts, and souls. It is critical that we have a light of truth shining through the dark and often confusing spaces of public schools (Psalm 119, Matt 5:14). FCA is a lamp unto the feet of coaches and teachers, providing a path to build trusted relationships and share the love of Jesus to kids of all ages. I am forever thankful for the support and direction FCA gave me as I gently introduced students to the ministry of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
